Al cumplirse 15 años de la incorporación de la soja trangénica en la Argentina, este trabajo plantea dos cuestiones: Por un lado un análisis de su introducción y un balance sobre su desarrollo y efectos. Por el otro se examina el caso de la provincia de Santiago del Estero, convertida en la quinta productora de soja del país, tras Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fé y Entre Ríos. El propósito de este artículo es analizar debates sobre la educación sexual en la Argentina entre 1910 y 1945, desde una perspectiva de género y enfocados en niños y niñas en procesos de escolarización. Se presentan tres ejes interrelacionados. El primero se centra en el sistema educativo y analiza principios, prescripciones y ponderaciones que se elaboraron en torno a la educación sexual. Para tal fin se analiza la revista La Higiene Escolar, publicación suplementaria del Monitor de Educación Común, y el (...) libro de texto obligatorio Higiene, publicado en 1927 y en circulación hasta la década de 1950.El segundo eje versa sobre la producción impresa de la Liga Argentina de Profilaxis Social, fundada en Buenos Aires en 1921 por un conjunto de médicos y profesores, con el objetivo de divulgar conocimientos sobre enfermedades venéreas y crear una conciencia sanitaria popular, que incluía la educación sexual de niños, niñas y adolescentes.El tercer eje analiza los vínculos entre los integrantes de la Liga con la Asociación Americana de Higiene Social, la Liga Nacional Francesa Contra el Peligro Venéreo y la Oficina Sanitaria de Berlín, que abonaron un discurso común sobre la educación sexual sustentado en el higienismo, la profilaxis y el eugenismo social. En esta investigación analizaremos los artículos que escribieron Domingo F. Sarmiento y Juana P. Manso sobre la educación de las mujeres en la provincia de Buenos Aires publicados en las revistas Anales de la Educación Común y La Educación Común durante el período 1858- 1878. Buscamos mostrar que sus intervenciones hicieron foco, por un lado, en criticar las políticas que implementaban los distintos funcionarios y por el otro, en elaborar propuestas para mejorar la situación de escolarización de las niñas, que (...) obtuvieron distintos resultados. En un contexto nacional de elevado analfabetismo femenino, ambos acusaban a los responsables de mantener las escuelas de niñas y la Escuela Normal bajo el control de una asociación privada que ofrecía una educación limitada a la costura y el bordado; resistirse a abandonar el sistema lancasteriano de enseñanza que, si bien en teoría había dejado de existir, persistía en la manera en que se organizaban las escuelas; y demorarse en la creación de escuelas graduadas para mujeres con los grados superiores. Del lado de las propuestas, señalaremos de qué manera, gracias a estos reiterados reclamos realizados a través de las revistas y en sus roles como funcionarios en distintas épocas, Sarmiento y Manso fueron logrando que la escolarización de las niñas en líneas generales resultase cada vez más extensa y de mejor calidad, aunque persistieron los problemas en otros ámbitos. Develops a critique of the concept of the attention economy from the perspectives of labour, time, and power.

The recent emergence of generative AI software as viable tools for use in the cultural and creative industries has sparked debates about the potential for “creativity” to be automated and “augmented” by algorithmic machines. Such discussions, however, begin from an ontological position, attempting to define creativity by either falling prey to universalism (i.e. “creativity is X”) or reductionism (i.e. “only humans can be truly creative” or “human creativity will be fully replaced by creative machines”). Furthermore, such an approach evades addressing (...) the real and material impacts of AI on creative labour in these industries. This article thus offers more expansive methodological and conceptual approaches to the recent hype on generative AI. By combining (Csikszentmihalyi, The systems model of creativity, Springer, Dordrecht, 2014) systems view of creativity, in which we emphasise the shift from “what” to “where” is creativity, with (Lievrouw, Media technologies, The MIT Press, 2014) relational-materialist theory of “mediation”, we argue that the study of “creativity” in the context of generative AI must be attentive to the interactions between technologies, practices, and social arrangements. When exploring the relational space between these elements, three core concepts become pertinent: creative labour, automation, and distributed agency. Critiquing “creativity” through these conceptual lenses allows us to re-situate the use of generative AI within discourses of labour in post-industrial capitalism and brings us to a conceptualisation of creativity that privileges neither the human user nor machine algorithm but instead emphasises a relational and distributed form of agency. According to modalism, modality is primitive. In this paper, we examine the implications of this view for modal epistemology, and articulate a modalist account of modal knowledge. First, we discuss a theoretical utility argument used by David Lewis in support of his claim that there is a plurality of concrete worlds. We reject this argument, and show how to dispense with possible worlds altogether. We proceed to account for modal knowledge in modalist terms.

Despite the alleged roles played by structures, substances, and facts in mathematical and metaphysical theorizing, in this paper I provide a strategy to dispense with them. It is argued that one need not be committed to the existence of these posits nor with the metaphysically inflationary interpretations that support them. An alternative, deflationary approach is then sketched.

Scientific pluralism is the view according to which there is a plurality of scientific domains and of scientific theories, and these theories are empirically adequate relative to their own respective domains. Scientific monism is the view according to which there is a single domain to which all scientific theories apply. How are these views impacted by the presence of inconsistent scientific theories? There are consistency-preservation strategies and inconsistency-toleration strategies. Among the former, two prominent strategies can be articulated: Compartmentalization and Information (...) restriction. Among the inconsistency-toleration strategies, we have: Paraconsistent compartmentalization and Dialetheism. In this paper, I critically assess the adequacy of each of these four views. (shrink)

In this paper, I provide an account of scientific representation that makes sense of the notion both at the nanoscale and at the quantum level: the partial mappings account. The account offers an extension of a proposal developed by R. I. G. Hughes in terms of denotation, demonstration, and interpretation (DDI). I first argue that the DDI account needs some amendments to accommodate representation of nano and quantum phenomena. I then introduce a generalized framework with the notions of unsharp denotation, (...) unsharp interpretation, and partial mappings. I conclude by arguing that the resulting view not only accommodates nano and quantum representations but also makes sense of representation by imaging in (scanning tunneling) microscopy. (shrink)

There has always been interest in inconsistency in science, not least within science itself as scientists strive to devise a consistent picture of the universe. Some important early landmarks in this history are Copernicus’s criticism of the Ptolemaic picture of the heavens, Galileo’s claim that Aristotle’s theory of motion was inconsistent, and Berkeley’s claim that the early calculus was inconsistent. More recent landmarks include the classical theory of the electron, Bohr’s theory of the atom, and the on-going difficulty of reconciling (...) Einstein’s general relativity and quantum theory. But over the past few decades philosophers have taken a particular and increasing interest in inconsistency in science. In 2002 this culminated in the first collection of articles specifically dedicated to the topic: Inconsistency in Science, edited by Joke Meheus, published by Kluwer, and featuring twelve articles on a range of topics in the philosophy of science and mathematics.Since then philosophic. One important role of belief systems is to allow us to represent information about a certain domain of inquiry. This paper presents a formal framework to accommodate such information representation. Three cognitive models to represent information are discussed: conceptual spaces, state-spaces, and the problem spaces familiar from artificial intelligence. After indicating their weakness to deal with partial information, it is argued that an alternative, formulated in terms of partial structures, can be provided which not only captures the positive features of (...) these models, but also accommodates the partiality of information ubiquitous in science and mathematics. Descartes seems to hold two inconsistent accounts of the ontological status of mathematical essences. Meditation Five apparently develops a platonist view about such essences, while the Principles seems to advocate some form of “conceptualism”. We argue that Descartes was neither a platonist nor a conceptualist. Crucial to our interpretation is Descartes’ dispositional nativism. We contend that his doctrine of innate ideas allows him to endorse a hybrid view which avoids the drawbacks of Gassendi’s conceptualism without facing the difficulties of platonism. (...) We call this hybrid view “quasi-platonism.” Our interpretation explains Descartes’ account of the nature of mathematical essences, dissolves the tension between the two texts, and highlights the benefits of Descartes’ view. This paper defends the use of possibility and necessity models based on the Logics of Formal Inconsistency, taking advantage of their expressivity in terms of the notions of consistency and inconsistency. The present proposal directly generalizes the approach of Besnard and Lang, whose main guidelines we borrow here. Some basic properties of possibility and necessity functions over the Logics of Formal Inconsistency are obtained and it is shown, by revisiting a paradigmatic example, how paraconsistent possibility and necessity reasoning can, in (...) general, attain realistic models for artificial judgement. This article shows the close relationship that exists between two fundamental concepts in the theological doctrine of Origen of Alexandria: “fullness” and“participation”. These two concepts have been the subject of many earlier studies. However, they treated the topic in a more restricted sense, exploring very specific aspects of Origenian theology. The originality of this study lies in demonstrating how both concepts recur frequently in his theological thinking, give it a framework and hold his thought together. In this paper, I argue that symmetry principles in physics (in particular, in quantum mechanics) have a methodological character, rather than an ontological or an epistemological one. First, I provide a framework to address three related issues regarding the notion of symmetry: (i) how the notion can be characterized; (ii) one way of discussing the nature of symmetry principles, and (iii) a tentative account of some types of symmetry in physics. To illustrate how the framework functions, I then consider the (...) case of the early formulation of quantum mechanics, examining the different roles played by symmetry in this context. Finally, I raise difficulties for ontological and purely episte. (shrink)

Quine has famously put forward the indispensability argument to force belief in the existence of mathematical objects (such as classes) due to their indispensability to our best theories of the world (Quine 1960). Quine has also advocated the indeterminacy of reference argument, according to which reference is dramatically indeterminate: given a language, there’s no unique reference relation for that language (see Quine 1969a). In this paper, I argue that these two arguments are in conflict with each other. Whereas the indispensability (...) argument supports realism about mathematics, the indeterminacy of reference argument, when applied to mathematics, provides a powerful strategy in support of mathematical anti-realism. I conclude the paper by indicating why the indeterminacy of reference phenomenon should be preferred over the considerations regarding indispensability. In the end, even the Quinean shouldn’t be a realist (platonist) about mathematics. (shrink)

This community of disciples, shining attitudes proclaimed the biblical hymn in question, should reflect the beauty of the world believe, witnessing mainly through service to those who need it most. The main objective refers to rethink their apostolate in the (...) Church, as a "cell" alternative community in the contemporary world. Relating up Scripture and Dogmatic Theology, presents the elemental importance of disciplinary integration in plural current context, in order to orthodoxy orthopraxy its translation. Observe the "intersection" of the Magnificat with the ecclesial identity, indicating the hope of a different world, inclusion and participation, hermeneutic view expressed by their theological research. O presente estudo, levado a efeito em 2012, teve por objetivo investigar as tendências da pesquisa educacional no que se refere aos chamados “distúrbios de aprendizagem”. Por meio da análise de 183 resumos de teses e dissertações que abordaram as dificuldades de aprendizagem, depositadas no banco de teses da CAPES entre 1987 e 2010 e, com base nas contribuições de Williams e Bourdieu, analisamos essas produções, das quais foram coletados os seguintes dados: Quem foram os autores institucionais? Quando se deram (...) as defesas? Como as investigações foram produzidas? Por fim, procuramos recolher dados que pudessem evidenciar se a tendência de imputar o baixo rendimento escolar a pretensos “distúrbios de aprendizagem” prevaleceu durante todo o período investigado ou se a perspectiva crítica, representada pelos estudos de Patto e Collares & Moysés, passou a influir sobre essa produção. Os resultados apontam que, apesar da disseminação da perspectiva contrária à prática de atribuir aos alunos as causas do seu baixo rendimento escolar, ainda prevalece a concepção tradicional, embora a produção com base na perspectiva crítica tenha crescido no período analisado. Hannah Arendt connects the end of Modernity with a historical specific event: the ascent of Totalitarianisms. According to Arendt, that event would have supposed a cut in History and Tradition, a gap between a suddenly foreign past and an unforseeable future. In this article I restate Arendt’s solutions to the problem of how can be reminded and told what, after the break in History and Philosophical Tradition, it is not possible to understand trought the traditional categories of significance.
